웬일이야, 네 유령이 또 나타나고? 
하긴 그렇게 희한한 일도 아니지
둥근 달도 떴겠다, 어쩌다 네 전화를 받았으니

그래, 이렇게 앉아 전화기를 손에 들고
한 2광년 옛날, 귀에 익었던 목소리를 들으니 
직선으로 말려들어 가는구나

난 기억하지, 울새알보다 더 파란 네 눈동자
나의 운문이 형편없다 했었지?
어디서 거는 거야?  중서부 어디 전화박스에서?
10년 전이었던가 네게 커프스단추 선물했었어
너도 내게 뭔가 주었었는데. . .
우리 다 알지, 추억이 무엇을 가져오는지
금강석과 녹이 아니겠어?

나타날 때부터 너는 전설이었어
부인할 수 없는 현상, 방랑자의 그 기본
홀연히 내 품 안으로 들어와 그곳에 머물렀지, 
잠시 바닷속에서 방황할 때에 그 성모는 네게 무료였고
그래, 반 껍질 조개안에 소녀가 너를 보호해 주었지

낙엽 깔린 그곳, 
하얀 눈에 헝클린 머리카락으로 서 있는 네 모습이 선하고
Washington Square 낡은 여관, 창문 밖을 내다보며 웃음 짓던 때
우리의 입김이 하얀 구름처럼 서로 얽혀 날고. . .
이건 나만의 생각이지만
우리 둘이 그때 그 자리에서 죽었어야 해

그런 nostalgia는 네겐 없다고?  그럼 다른 말로 해봐
넌 정말 말은 멋있게 했었어, 
특히 뭔가 애매하게 하는 데에는
내가 지금 그 애매한 것이 좀 필요해서. . .
아냐, 이제 모든 것이 뚜렷하게 돌아왔어
그래, 난 정말로 너를 사랑했었어
그리고, 이제 네가 금강석과 녹을 내게 베푼다 해도
난 그 값을 벌써 치렀어

As I remember your eyes were bluer than robin's eggs 
My poetry was lousy you said 
Where are you calling from?  A booth in the Midwest? 
Ten years ago I bought you some cufflinks
You brought me something 
We both know what memories can bring 
They bring Diamonds and Rust

You burst on the scene already a legend 
The unwashed phenomenon, the original vagabond
You strayed in to my arms  
There you stayed, temporarily lost at sea
The Madonna was yours for free
Yes, the girl on the half shell could keep you unharmed

Now I see you standing with brown leaves falling all around
 and snow in your hair 
Now we're smiling out the window of the crummy hotel
 over washington square
Our breath comes out white clouds, mingles and hangs in the air
Speaking strictly for me 
We both could've died then and there 

Now you're telling me you're not nostalgic 
Then give me another word for it 
You, who  were so good with words 
And at keeping things vague 

'Cause I need some of that vagueness now 
It's all come back too clearly 
Yes, I loved you dearly 
And if you're offering me diamonds and rust 
I've already paid
