Yesterday when I was young

The taste of life was sweet like rain upon my tongue.

I teased at life as if it were a foolish game

The thousand dreams I dreamed, the splendid things I planned

I always built to last on weak and shifting sand

I lived by night and shunned the naked light of the day

And only now I see how the years have run away

 

제가 젊었던 그 날에는

입술에 내려앉는 빗방울처럼 인생의 맛이 달콤했습니다

저녁 산들바람이 촛불을 희롱하듯이

삶을 어리석은 장난인 듯 희롱하였고

수많은 이상의 꿈도, 설계했던 화려한 일들도

항상 힘없이 무너지는 모래 위에 쌓고 있었습니다

밤으로 살아가고 밝은 낮의 빛을 외면하며

이제야 그런 세월이 마냥 가버렸음을 알 수 있습니다

So many wild pleasures lay in store for me

And so much pain my dazzled eyes refused to see 

I ran so fast that time and youth at last ran out

I never stopped to think what life was all about

And every conversation I can now recall

Concerned itself with me and nothing else at all

 

제가 젊었던 그 날에는

수 없는 즐거운 노래들이 불러주길 기다리고 있었고

수 없는 미친듯한 쾌락들이 제게 있었기에

현혹된 눈에 고통이란 무엇이든 보이지 않았습니다

너무 급히 뛰는 사이에 시간과 젊음은 줄달음치고

한 번도 삶이 무엇인가 생각하려 멈추지 않았습니다

기억하는 대화 하나하나가 저에 관한 이야기였고

그 이외에는 아무것도 없었습니다

 

Yesterday the moon was blue

And every crazy day brought something new to do

I used my magic age as if it were a wand

And never saw the waste and emptiness beyond

The game of love I played with arrogance and pride

And every flame I lit so quickly quickly died

The friends I made all seemed somehow to drift away

그날에는 달빛도 프르슴하였고

열광의 하루하루가 뭔가 새로운 일을 가져왔습니다

저의 젊음이 마치 마술사의 지휘봉인 듯 휘두며

결국 낭비와 공허가 남는 것임도 예측하지 못했습니다

사랑의 희롱도 오만과 자만으로

타오르는 정열도 그렇게 급히 식어버렸고

사귄 친구들도 어떻게 모두 사라져 버린 듯

단지 저만이 무대에 남아 이 연극을 끝내야 합니다

제 입술에 씁쓸하게 느껴지는 눈물
